From Dali, we climb north through dramatic mountain gorges to the misty highland wonderland of Shangri-La, before ending our trip in the atmospheric cobblestone lanes of Lijiang at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. We set out early today for the colorful Dongchuan Red Land region, starting with a stop at scenic Music Hollow (Yuepuao) near Flower Stone Village, where rolling hills of multi-colored crops stretch to the horizon. Wake up before dawn today to catch the soft, dreamy sunrise over the red terraces at Damakan, where the first light of day turns the landscape into a patchwork of crimson, gold, and emerald green. Today is all about immersing in traditional Bai ethnic culture. We head first to the ancient town of Xizhou to experience the iconic Bai three-course tea ceremony, a centuries-old ritual that uses sweet, bitter, and neutral teas to reflect the journey of life. Next, we visit Zhoucheng, the birthplace of Bai tie-dye, for a tour of a local family-run tie-dye workshop where you can learn about this time-honored craft. We leave Dali today and head north toward Shangri-La’s highlands, stopping first to admire the dramatic First Bend of the Yangtze River, where the river cuts a sweeping turn through towering mountain cliffs. Next, we visit world-famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest canyons on Earth, where the rushing Jinsha River carves through sheer rock faces for a truly awe-inspiring view. Once we arrive, we wander the winding cobblestone lanes of UNESCO-listed Lijiang Old Town, where wooden courtyard homes line gurgling ancient canals. Next, we visit serene Black Dragon Pool Park, where you can capture postcard-perfect views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the park’s clear green waters. Today we fully explore the iconic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area. We start at the open, sweeping grasslands of Ganhaizi Meadow, with panoramic views of the snow-capped mountain range. Next, we visit stunning Blue Moon Valley (also called Baishui River), where glacial meltwater glows a brilliant turquoise blue from mineral deposits. After that, we take a chairlift up to either Glacier Park or Spruce Meadow (your choice) for up-close views of the mountain’s ancient glaciers and alpine scenery. I was a little nervous about doing a group adventure tour, but this experience exceeded all my expectations. The Dongchuan Red Land was even more vibrant than any photo I’d seen online, looking like a patchwork quilt of rust and green stretched across rolling hills. Waking up early to see the sunrise over Lijiang’s old town, then visiting snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain later that day was perfectly planned. I left Yunnan feeling fully inspired, already planning my next visit back to this incredible corner of China.

Our consultant Sunny from HelloChinaTrip was incredibly helpful when we asked for a small adjustment to add extra time exploring Dali’s Erhai Lake. This 10-day route hits all the best spots in Yunnan without cramming too much into each day. Our local guide shared so much fascinating cultural context about each region that we never would have learned on our own. Every stop on this itinerary felt perfectly paced, never too rushed or too slow. From the rust-colored hues of the Red Land to the ancient cobblestone streets of Lijiang, every moment felt magical. The local Yunnan food we tried at family-run spots was an unexpected highlight.

The destinations and itinerary itself were absolutely incredible. We had three straight days of unseasonable rain that blocked the views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and made our Shangri-la hike slippery, which kept us from enjoying one full day of activities.
