After morning breakfast, we leave Kunming behind and head to the breathtaking, multicolored Dongchuan Red Land. We’ll first wander through the rolling flower-strewn hills of Music Hollow (Yuepuao), then stop at Wafang Liangzi to capture the layered red, green and gold patchwork landscape with your camera. We’ll end the day staying for golden sunset at Music Hollow, where low light makes the iron-rich red soil glow, before exploring the scenic gully of Luoxianggou Valley. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included today.
Wake up early this morning to catch the dreamy pink-and-orange sunrise over rolling red hills at Damakan, Dongchuan’s most iconic photography spot. After sunrise, we visit the vividly hued Seven-Color Slope (Qicaipo), where layers of different crops create a rainbow effect across the hillsides, then stop at Jinxiuyuan to admire more of the region’s signature red landscape before driving back to Kunming. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are provided, and you’ll check into your central Kunming hotel for the night 🏨.
We travel south from Kunming today to the historic ancient town of Jianshui. First, we’ll visit the iconic Shuanglong Bridge, a picturesque 17-arch stone bridge stretching across a quiet river popular with photographers, then explore the well-preserved traditional courtyard homes of Tuanshan Village, a historic Hakka settlement. Next, we tour the elegant Garden of Family Zhang, a classic southern Chinese garden filled with historic pavilions and rare plants, before taking a leisurely walk through the winding streets of Jianshui Old City. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included, and you’ll stay at local Lin'an Hotel for the night 🏨.
We start today exploring Jianshui’s top cultural landmarks: first we tour the grand ancient Confucius Temple, one of the largest and best-preserved Confucian temples in southern China, then visit the sprawling, ornate Zhu Family Garden, a historic residential complex that showcases classic southern Chinese architectural design. After wrapping up our Jianshui tour, we drive to Yuanyang, home of the world-famous Hani rice terraces, arriving in time to catch a breathtaking golden sunset over the dramatic terraced slopes at Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth). 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included today.
Rise early for one of Yuanyang’s most unforgettable experiences: watching the sunrise paint thousands of layers of Duoyishu Rice Terrace Fields silver and gold as soft mist rolls across the valley. After sunrise, we take a walk through the traditional Hani village of Duoyishu to learn about centuries-old local terrace farming culture, then visit nearby Qingkou Village, another charming centuries-old Hani settlement nestled into the terrace hills. We end the day exploring the vast, sweeping Bada Hani Rice Terrace, one of the largest continuous terrace systems in the region. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included.
We leave Yuanyang’s terraces behind this morning and drive back towards Kunming, stopping along the way to tour the otherworldly Stone Forest, a vast natural landscape of jagged limestone karst formations that look like a dense forest carved from stone. After exploring this unique UNESCO-listed site, we continue on to Kunming, where you’ll check into your familiar central hotel for the night. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included, and accommodation 🏨 is either Holiday Inn Kunming City Centre or Wyndham Garden Kunming Pan.

My partner and I booked this tour for our anniversary and it couldn't have been more perfect. We got to watch sunrises over terraced fields, wander ancient old towns, and taste delicious local Yunnan food at every stop. We're already telling all our friends to book this trip when they visit China.

I traveled solo on this tour and felt completely comfortable the entire two weeks. Starting in Kunming was a great way to acclimate to altitude before heading further north to higher elevation spots like Shangri-La. The Red Land's rolling colorful hills were a huge surprise highlight that I didn't even expect to love as much as I did. Dali's laid back vibe was the perfect mid-tour reset, and Lijiang's ancient alleys are just as magical as everyone says. This tour truly has something for every type of traveler, from hikers to food lovers to culture buffs.

The mix of nature and cultural stops on this tour is perfectly balanced. I got to see some of the most breathtaking landscapes I've ever seen while also learning so much about Yunnan's different ethnic communities.

I was blown away by how diverse Yunnan is, and this tour hits every single must-see spot you can't miss. The Dongchuan Red Land was even more vibrant red than I saw in photos, and Yuanyang's terraced fields at sunrise took my breath away. Dali's Erhai Lake stop was such a lovely relaxed break between more mountainous areas, and Lijiang's old town had so much charming culture to explore. By the time we got to Shangri-La, I was already planning my next trip back to this incredible part of China.

My consultant Lynn from HelloChinaTrip helped me adjust the itinerary to add an extra night in Dali, and she was so helpful every step of the booking process. Every destination on this 14-day tour was stunning, from the warm greens of Yuanyang's terraces to the snow-capped peaks around Lijiang. The pace was just right, giving us enough time to explore each spot without feeling like we were rushing every single day. This is the perfect way to see all of Yunnan's best spots without the stress of planning everything yourself.

The tour itinerary is fantastic and all the spots were incredibly beautiful. We visited during peak national holiday week though, and most popular overlooks were very wonderful.
