This 8-day journey weaves together wildlife encounters, ancient culture, mouthwatering local food, and jaw-dropping natural wonder across Southwest China. We start in laid-back Chengdu, home to the world’s most famous giant pandas, where we dig into the history of the ancient Shu Kingdom before gliding via high-speed train to hilly, vibrant Chongqing. After exploring Chongqing’s iconic city sights and taking a day trip to the dramatic karst gorges of Wulong, we board another high-speed train to Zhangjiajie, where we spend three full days exploring the jagged, mist-shrouded peaks that inspired Avatar, ending with a stunning cable car ride up Tianmen Mountain before departure. This route balances city culture and wild nature for a complete taste of Southwest China’s unique magic.
🌟 Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu Touch down in Chengdu, Sichuan’s tea-loving, laid-back capital, and transfer to your accommodation to settle in. 🌟 Day 2: Pandas & Ancient Shu Culture in Chengdu Wake up early (the best time to see active, playful pandas!) for a full day of Chengdu’s most iconic experiences. We start at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, where you’ll watch fluffy giant pandas munch bamboo, spot energetic red pandas, and learn about giant panda conservation at the on-site Panda Museum. Next, we visit the incredible Sanxingdui Site Museum to see the mysterious, world-famous bronze relics of the lost ancient Shu Kingdom; if Sanxingdui tickets are unavailable, we’ll swap for a day exploring Chengdu Museum, historic Kuanzhai Alley, and a traditional tea break at Renmin Park instead. 🌟 Day 3: Chengdu → Chongqing After breakfast, we board a comfortable high-speed train for the short journey from Chengdu to Chongqing, China’s foggy hillside river capital. Once we arrive and check in, we set out to explore the city’s most iconic spots: watch the viral light rail that passes straight through a residential building at the Liziba Metro viewing platform, snap photos at the historic Kuixing Building, and visit the landmark Jiefangbei monument at the heart of downtown. 🌟 Day 4: Wulong Karst Day Trip from Chongqing Today we venture outside the city to explore the dramatic karst landscape of Wulong. First, we step out onto the 280-meter-high glass observation deck for sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding gorges and peaks. Next, we ride a sightseeing elevator down into the gorge to explore the famous Three Natural Bridges: Tianlong Bridge, Qinglong Bridge, and Heilong Bridge, a series of incredible natural rock formations carved over thousands of years. 🌟 Day 5: Chongqing → Zhangjiajie We grab breakfast this morning before boarding our high-speed train to Zhangjiajie, home to some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Earth. 🌟 Day 6: Zhangjiajie National Park Core Exploration Today we dive into the iconic peaks of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. We ride the famous Bailong Elevator (one of the world’s tallest outdoor elevators) up to the Yuanjiajie scenic area, then hike along a gentle cliffside trail for up-close views of the otherworldly Hallelujah Mountains (the inspiration for Avatar’s floating peaks) and the stunning First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural rock bridge spanning two mountain peaks. 🌟 Day 7: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & Glass Bridge Today we head to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon for a day of adventure amid lush green valleys and steep cliff walls. Our main stop is the world-famous Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, perched 300 meters above the canyon floor. 🌟 Day 8: Tianmen Mountain & Departure Our final day starts with a ride on the world’s longest cable car, a 7,455-meter journey that takes 30 minutes to climb all the way to the top of Tianmen Mountain. Once at the top, we visit the iconic Heaven’s Door, a massive natural arch carved into the mountain, and take in views of the famous 99-bend Avenue toward Heaven that winds up the mountain slopes. My partner and I booked this tour for our anniversary, and it exceeded every single one of our expectations. We loved the balance of active hiking in Zhangjiajie, relaxed sightseeing in Chengdu, and chaotic city exploration in Chongqing. Getting an up-close visit with the giant pandas at the Chengdu Research Base was the highlight of the whole trip for me, and we got to go early before the big crowds hit. We’ve already been recommending this tour to all of our friends who want to visit this part of China, we couldn’t have asked for a better 8 days.

I was nervous about traveling to China for the first time, but this tour took all the stress out of planning. We got to do so many unique local experiences: making Sichuan noodles with a local family in Chengdu, taking a night cruise along the Jialing River in Chongqing, and hiking the famous glass bridge in Zhangjiajie that I’d seen so many photos of. All the transportation between cities was pre-arranged and seamless, and our group only had 10 people total, so it felt really intimate. The food on this tour alone was worth the price of admission—every meal was packed with local flavors that I never would have found on my own. This is easily the best organized tour I’ve ever joined.

I loved exploring Chengdu’s old alleyways and trying Chongqing’s famous spicy hotpot with our group. Unfortunately, we had two days of heavy fog in Zhangjiajie that blocked most of the mountain views, which was a big disappointment. The itinerary was still perfectly planned, and our guide did everything possible to adjust our schedule to wait for clearer skies. I’d still recommend this tour to anyone, just try to go in a drier month if you can for the best views.

Chongqing’s chaotic, hilly, neon-lit cityscape was such a cool surprise, I had no idea how vibrant it would be. Zhangjiajie’s mountains look even more incredible in person than they do on social media, it’s impossible not to be awed.

Seeing the giant pandas in Chengdu was a dream come true, and the Zhangjiajie quartz peaks took my breath away. Our small group size meant we never felt rushed, and our guide knew all the best hidden photo spots. I’d book this trip again in a heartbeat.
