I went on this tour with my sister, who also loves historic architecture, and we both had the most amazing 17 days. We got to experience everything from grand imperial palaces in Beijing to humble, beautiful traditional village homes across the countryside. This is the perfect China tour for anyone who wants to go beyond the standard sightseeing itinerary and dive deep into a fascinating cultural tradition.

The stop in Chongqing to see traditional cliffside architecture paired with the region’s unique building adaptations was such a wonderful surprise. Every stop on the tour was thoughtfully selected to show off the incredible diversity of classical Chinese building styles across different regions of China.

The architecture highlights on this tour were absolutely incredible, and I learned so much about centuries-old Chinese building traditions. I’m giving 4 stars only because we traveled during the New Year holiday rush, and most major sites were far more wonderful than I expected, which made it hard to take my time exploring.

I’ve done multiple architecture-themed tours across Europe and Asia, and this one is easily among the best I’ve ever joined. Our guide knew every intimate detail about how ancient wooden structures were built without nails, and how feng shui principles shaped the placement of temples and imperial palaces in Beijing. Walking the full length of Xi’an preserved ancient city wall and looking out over the blend of old and new was a moment I’ll never forget. If you love architecture and history, this tour is an absolute must-book.

Lynn from HelloChinaTrip helped me adjust my pre-tour extension a week before departure, and she was helpful and responsive every step of the way. I loved how this itinerary focused specifically on architecture, not just generic tourist stops—we got to explore hidden wooden pagodas in Xi'an and stunning stilt houses along Guilin's Li River. Every site explanation was packed with fascinating historical context that made the ancient buildings feel alive, not just static attractions. By the end of the 17 days, I had a whole new appreciation for how classical Chinese architecture works with the natural landscape instead of against it.

As an architecture graduate, I’ve dreamed of seeing traditional Chinese buildings in person for years. Getting to walk through Beijing’s Forbidden City and the preserved shikumen courtyards of Shanghai was an absolute dream. The itinerary was perfectly paced to let me soak in every structural detail.
