This 10-day curated journey offers the perfect mix of jaw-dropping natural beauty and vibrant urban energy, taking you from the laid-back tea culture of Chengdu, through the neon-lit hills of Chongqing, to the otherworldly floating peaks of Zhangjiajie, through the lush river karsts of Yangshuo, and finally to the global hub of Hong Kong. The route is designed to alternate between full-day adventures in world-famous scenic areas and unstructured free days to explore at your own pace, making it ideal for travelers wanting to experience the full diversity of China’s landscapes and cultures.
Kick off your China adventure with a casual orientation stroll around central Chengdu, where you’ll get a feel for the city’s slow, tea-focused vibe while breaking the ice and getting to know your fellow group members. After your walk, you’ll check into the locally themed Poshpacker Local Tea Hostel for the night. 🏨
Leave Chengdu’s relaxed streets behind and travel to Chongqing, China’s one-of-a-kind hillside megacity sitting at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Settle in with a gentle orientation walk to get your bearings near the central Jiefangbei district, then check into the comfortable Green Oriental Hotel (Jiefangbei Qixinggang Branch) for your stay. 🏨
Spend a full day soaking up the best of Chongqing’s culture and sights! Start with a wander through the historic cobblestone lanes of Ciqikou Old Town, where you can browse handcrafted souvenirs and sample mouthwatering spicy local snacks. Join a guided city walking tour to learn about the city’s fascinating history, then end your day at Hongyadong to watch the famous night view of its cascading stilt architecture light up the riverfront. You’ll return to your Jiefangbei hotel for the night. 🏨
Trade Chongqing’s urban buzz for the misty mountain landscapes of Zhangjiajie, one of China’s most breathtaking national park destinations. After arriving, take a casual orientation walk to acclimate to the mountain air and get your bearings before checking into your accommodation (either Royal Hotel Zhangjiajie or Yuzun Hotel Zhangjiajie) for a three-night stay. 🏨
Today you’ll explore the iconic Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, made famous as the inspiration for the Avatar floating mountains. Spend the full day winding through forest trails, past towering quartz sandstone peaks and misty valleys, stopping at world-famous overlooks for incredible panoramic views. After a day of adventure, return to your Zhangjiajie hotel to rest. 🏨
Enjoy a full free day to explore Zhangjiajie at your own pace! You can choose to return to the national park to check out sights you missed, visit a nearby local village to try authentic Hunan cuisine, or simply relax at your hotel after a few days of adventure. You’ll stay another night at your Zhangjiajie accommodation. 🏨
Travel from Zhangjiajie’s mountain peaks to the lush, river-carved karst landscapes of Yangshuo, a beloved scenic getaway in southern China. Once you arrive, take a relaxed orientation walk to get acquainted with the town’s laid-back, riverside vibe, then check into the cozy Floral Hotel Memorize Scene for a three-night stay. 🏨
Explore Yangshuo’s stunning countryside on a guided group cycle tour today! Ride along quiet country lanes past the Li River, green rice paddies, and iconic karst hill formations, stopping to take photos and interact with local villagers along the way. A delicious group lunch is included after your ride 🍽️, before you join the group for a fun night out experiencing Yangshuo’s famous lively nightlife. Return to your hotel to rest for the night. 🏨
Enjoy another unstructured free day in Yangshuo to do as you please. You can book an optional activity like a Li River bamboo raft cruise, a local cooking class, or a sunset hike up to a hilltop viewpoint, or just wander the town’s riverside markets, relax at a cafe, or lounge at your hotel. You’ll stay another night at Floral Hotel Memorize Scene. 🏨
After wrapping up your time in Yangshuo, your guided tour concludes as you travel to Hong Kong, where you’re free to continue exploring China on your own terms.

I went on this tour with my teenage kids, and every single one of us left already planning when we can come back. The natural scenery was more stunning than any photo I’d seen online, and the cities felt so alive and welcoming. We ate so much amazing food along the way, and got to take so many incredible photos we’ll cherish forever.

Seeing the Terracotta Army and the Zhangjiajie Avatar mountains in one trip was absolutely unforgettable.

As someone who loves both outdoor adventures and urban exploring, this tour checked every single box for me. We started in Chengdu watching giant pandas munch on bamboo in their lush enclosures, then hiked through the misty peaks of Zhangjiajie that felt straight out of a fantasy movie. Next, we learned thousands of years of Chinese history exploring the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, before ending our trip with a spicy hot pot dinner and stunning night river cruise in Chongqing. Our guide was full of fun facts and great recommendations for local snacks, making every stop even more enjoyable. I would recommend this tour to any first-time visitor to China who wants to see the best of what the country has to offer.

I adored every destination on this itinerary, from the otherworldly landscapes of Zhangjiajie to the spicy, delicious street food of Chongqing. The only issue was that we traveled during the spring holiday, so all major attractions were far more wonderful than we anticipated. We had to wait 45 minutes longer than expected for entry to the Terracotta Army, which cut a small amount of time off our free exploration. Even with that minor inconvenience, every stop was absolutely worth visiting, and the overall trip was incredible.

Ethan, our consultant from HelloChinaTrip, planned every single detail of this tour flawlessly so we never had to worry about logistics. Zhangjiajie’s sandstone pillars felt like stepping into another world, and getting close to giant pandas in Chengdu was the highlight of my entire year. This is easily the best organized international tour I’ve ever joined.

The contrast between the quiet, stunning national parks and the buzzing, vibrant cities was such a wonderful experience. The 10-day timeline felt perfect, never too rushed and never too slow, and we got to see so much of China’s unique beauty and culture.
