Set off on an 8-day bespoke off-the-beaten-path adventure centered in the Guilin region of Southwest China, where you’ll explore authentic ethnic minority villages across 5 distinct local destinations. This tour works around your travel plans with flexible daily departure options, and includes a dedicated private guide to tailor every stop to your unique interests, rather than forcing you into a rigid one-size-fits-all itinerary. Designed for a stress-free memorable trip, it offers competitive unbeatable pricing and secure, trusted payment processing for a one-of-a-kind deep dive into China’s rich indigenous cultural heritage.

This 8-day journey starts in the mountainous heart of Guizhou, winding through remote, unspoiled Miao and Dong ethnic minority villages before crossing into Guangxi to take in the iconic karst and rice terrace scenery around Guilin. You’ll move slowly from remote village life to world-famous natural landmarks, getting an up-close look at centuries-old craft traditions, vibrant cultural performances, and the diverse living heritage of China’s ethnic groups, all with the flexibility to adapt the trip to what you want to see most.
Arrive in Guiyang at your own pace and settle into your centrally located accommodation for the night. There are no scheduled activities today, so you can rest after your journey, explore nearby local streets, and get ready for your cultural adventure starting tomorrow. You’ll stay at Holiday Inn Guiyang City Center 🏨.
Kick off your day with a filling Western buffet breakfast 🍽️, then depart Guiyang for Kaili. Your first stop is atmospheric Qingyan Old Town, where you can wander cobblestone lanes lined with centuries-old architecture. Next, you’ll visit a Miao village to learn about their generations-old traditional paper-making craft, before heading to Qingman Miao Village to see the iconic hillside wooden stilt houses the community is known for. A group lunch is included 🍽️, and after a full day of exploring, you’ll check into your hotel at Banshan Wanda Plaza in central Kaili 🏨.
Start your day with a hearty Western buffet breakfast 🍽️ before leaving Kaili for the mountain village region of Rongjiang. First you’ll visit Datang Village, home to the unique Short-skirt Miao ethnic group, then stop at Langde Village to meet the Long-skirt Miao community. Catch a vibrant traditional singing and dancing performance at Langde that showcases the group’s rich cultural heritage, before exploring the quiet, lush Huanggang Dong Village. At the end of the day, you’ll check into the cozy Huanggang Hecang Suji Hotel 🏨.
Wake up to a flavorful traditional Chinese breakfast 🍽️, then depart Huanggang for Zhaoxing. First you’ll explore the little-visited Zhanli Dong Village, where you can wander quiet lanes and experience authentic, unhurried local daily life. Next, you’ll visit Basha Miao Village, a unique community with deeply preserved traditional customs. As night falls, you’ll head to Zhaoxing Dong Village for a magical night performance of the famous Dong Grand Song, a world-renowned vocal cultural tradition. You’ll stay overnight at the scenic Qing Ding Ge (Indigo Lodge) in Zhaoxing 🏨.
Enjoy a traditional Chinese breakfast 🍽️ to start your day, then leave Zhaoxing for the next leg of your journey. First you’ll visit Tang'an Dong Village, a hillside settlement famous for its rolling terraced views and traditional wooden architecture. Next you’ll visit the iconic Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge, a masterpiece of traditional Dong engineering that has stood for centuries. After exploring another quiet Dong village near Sanjiang, you’ll continue on to Longsheng and check into Ping An Hotel for the night 🏨.
Start your day with a filling Western-style breakfast 🍽️. Today you’ll visit one of China’s most iconic natural landscapes: the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces, where rolling layers of green terraced fields stretch across entire mountainsides for a jaw-dropping view. After exploring the terraces, you’ll stop at a local Zhuang People's Village to learn about their daily life and traditions. Then you’ll travel on to Guilin, where you’ll check into the comfortable Guilin Bravo Hotel for the night 🏨.
After a generous Western buffet breakfast 🍽️, you’ll board your cruise for a scenic sail down the world-famous Li River, with jagged karst peaks rising dramatically from the water on both sides. A simple, tasty basic Chinese lunch box is served on board during your cruise 🍽️. Once you reach Yangshuo, you’ll head out into the peaceful countryside to explore, and stop at a local villager’s home to get a taste of authentic rural Yangshuo life. After your day of exploring, you’ll return to Guilin and check back into Guilin Bravo Hotel for the night 🏨.
Your final day of the adventure starts with a delicious Western buffet breakfast 🍽️. Today you’ll visit two of Guilin’s most iconic natural landmarks: first, the stunning Reed Flute Cave, a spectacular limestone cave filled with otherworldly rock formations. Next you’ll visit Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin’s most famous natural landmark that resembles a gentle elephant drinking from the river. After your sightseeing, your 8-day cultural adventure comes to an end.

If you’re tired of crowded tourist buses and superficial visits to “cultural villages” built just for tourism, this tour is for you. Every village we stopped at was authentic, with residents going about their daily lives just as they normally do, and our guide made sure we were respectful of local customs at every turn. The food was incredible too—we got to try home-cooked minority dishes at a local family’s home that were way better than any restaurant meal I had in the city. I’m already planning my next trip back to explore more of the region.

I booked this tour last minute because it offers daily departures, which was a huge lifesaver when my original plans fell through. The team put together a custom itinerary that fit my late booking perfectly, and my guide was ready and waiting for me when I arrived in Guilin. Crossing the karst mountains to reach remote hill villages felt like stepping back in time, and every interaction with locals was warm and genuine. I loved that the tour prioritizes supporting local communities directly, rather than big international tourism companies. This will go down as the best trip of my life, no question.

We had an absolutely wonderful time exploring the villages, and our guide was fantastic the entire trip. We knocked off one star only because we visited in January and had two days of heavy rain that blocked the mountain views we’d hoped for. All the itinerary planning was still top-notch, so this is just a note for other travelers to pick a drier season if you can.

Ethan from HelloChinaTrip helped me customize this 8-day adventure perfectly when I reached out saying I wanted to focus more on ethnic craft traditions rather than busy tourist spots. Our private guide in Guilin was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing little-known history of the Zhuang and Yao communities we visited and making introductions to local artisans that let us have genuine conversations, not just quick photo ops. The daily itinerary was perfectly paced, with enough free time to wander villages and sit for tea with locals whenever we wanted. I left with so many beautiful handmade souvenirs and a deeper understanding of the cultures that call this region home.

The private guide setup made this trip feel so relaxed and personal, unlike any group tour I’ve done before. Getting to visit 5 different minority groups meant I got to experience so many unique cultural traditions in just 8 days.

My private guide knew all the best hidden spots in the minority villages that we’d never have found on our own. Every day felt tailored exactly to what I wanted to see, from weaving demonstrations to mountain hikes. Can’t recommend this enough.
