From Jianshui we move on to the world-famous, mist-shrouded Hani rice terraces of Yuanyang, wrapping up with a stop at the otherworldly karst landscape of the Stone Forest before returning to Kunming for your departure. This route balances iconic natural sights and off-the-beaten-path cultural experiences for a complete taste of Yunnan’s magic.
Today is your arrival day in Kunming, Yunnan’s relaxed, perennial spring-like provincial capital! Tonight you’ll stay at the centrally located Holiday Inn Kunming City Centre 🏨.
We leave Kunming bright and early this morning bound for Dongchuan’s iconic multicolored Red Land, one of Yunnan’s most photographed natural wonders. We’ll explore the stunning Music Hollow scenic area near Flower Stone Village, then hop between different vista points to catch unbeatable golden sunset views: first over the rolling hills at Wafang Liangzi, then back to Music Hollow for golden-hour photography, and finally to the dramatic ravines of Luoxianggou for one last glowing look at the rust-hued terrain. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included today, and we’ll stay overnight at cozy Wangshan Courtyard 🏨, positioned close to the scenic spots for easy early access tomorrow.
We’re up before dawn today to catch the world-famous sunrise over Damakan, where the first soft light of day turns the patchwork of red, green, and gold slopes into a living painting. After sunrise, we’ll wander the rainbow-hued Seven-Color Slope near Embroidery Garden, then visit the scenic terraced plots of Jinxiuyuan before we make our way back to Kunming. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included, and we’ll check back into Holiday Inn Kunming City Centre for the night 🏨.
Today we travel south from Kunming to Jianshui, a charming ancient city brimming with over 1200 years of history and traditional culture. Our first stop is the iconic Shuanglong Bridge, a graceful 17-arch historic stone bridge spanning a misty, slow-moving river. Next we visit Tuanshan Village, a well-preserved traditional courtyard settlement founded during the Qing Dynasty, where we’ll wander the elegant historic Garden of the Zhang Family. We’ll end the day strolling through atmospheric Jianshui Old City, soaking in the slow pace of local life. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are provided today, and we’ll stay at the unique Suyin Fuyali property near Jianshui’s old Linyang Prefectural Office 🏨.
We start our day exploring Jianshui’s most iconic cultural landmarks before heading up to the Yuanyang rice terraces. First we tour Jianshui’s grand, centuries-old Confucius Temple, one of the largest and best-preserved Confucian temples in all of China. Next we wander the ornate, lush grounds of the Zhu Family Garden, a stunning example of traditional Yunnan private garden architecture. After lunch we drive to Yuanyang, arriving in plenty of time to catch the dreamy golden sunset over the dramatic Laohuzui (Tiger Mouth) Terraces, where thousands of layers of rice paddies glow under the fading sun. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included, and we’ll stay at Oness Resort Yuanyang Terrace for the night 🏨.
Today is fully dedicated to exploring the otherworldly Yuanyang rice terraces, which have been carefully carved into the hills by the Hani people over more than 1,000 years. We rise early to catch the iconic misty sunrise at Duoyishu, where layers of terraced fields turn soft pink as the sun peeks over the sea of clouds below. After sunrise, we visit traditional Hani Qingkou Village, which is nestled right among the terraces, then explore the expansive Bada Hani Rice Terraces, before stopping to browse the bustling local Shengcun Market to experience authentic daily Hani life. 🍽️ Breakfast and lunch are included, and we’ll stay at the scenic Clouds & Terraces Hotel tonight 🏨.

If you’re looking to see the best of southwest Yunnan in just over a week, this tour is absolutely perfect. It balances jaw-dropping natural scenery with rich cultural history, giving you the full experience of this unique part of China. I’d book this trip again in a heartbeat.

When I reached out to HelloChinaTrip to plan my Yunnan trip, my consultant Sunny adjusted the itinerary slightly to accommodate my mobility needs, which I really appreciated. The 8-day route hits all the best spots in this part of Yunnan, and I never felt rushed or like we were packing too much in each day. The red land’s vivid crimson colors were even more incredible than the photos I’d seen online, and the local food we tried in each town was fresh, flavorful, and authentic. I left Yunnan feeling like I got a real sense of the region’s culture and natural beauty, not just a surface-level tourist experience.

I loved getting to experience the local culture in Jianshui, from tasting the traditional street tofu to walking the ancient stone bridge. The itinerary was well-paced, giving us enough time to explore each spot without rushing. We visited in late December and got unlucky with heavy unseasonal rain that obscured the sunrise views over the Yuanyang rice terraces, which was the highlight I was most looking forward to. Even so, I still enjoyed every other part of the trip and would still recommend it to other travelers.
