🌟 Day 1: Kunming Settle into Yunnan’s famously spring-like weather as you begin your adventure today. You’ll first head to the serene Golden Temple, a gleaming golden-roofed Taoist temple tucked into the forested slopes of Mingfeng Hill, where you can wander quiet paths and soak in centuries of local history. After that, meander through the willow-lined shores of Green Lake Park, a beloved local green space where you can watch residents practice tai chi or feed the park’s famous black swans. At the end of the day, you’ll check into your selected accommodation: either the stylish Cachet Boutique Kunming Artime or the convenient, central Green Lake Hotel.
🌟 Day 2: Kunming → Dali Start your day with a filling included 🍽️ Western buffet breakfast, then travel from Kunming to Dali. Along the way, you’ll stop at the bustling Zhuanxin Farmers’ Market, where you can browse piles of vibrant local produce, fragrant Yunnan specialties, and handcrafted goods to get a real taste of everyday local life. Next, explore the otherworldly Stone Forest, a vast landscape of jagged karst limestone formations that rise from the ground like a naturally carved stone forest. When you arrive in Dali, you’ll check into 🏨 Dali Iridescent Clouds Hotel for the night.
🌟 Day 3: Dali Kick off your day of exploration with an included 🍽️ Western buffet breakfast, then dive into Dali’s most iconic cultural and natural gems. Wander the cobblestone lanes of Dali Ancient City, where ancient city walls, wooden shopfronts, and local craft stalls blend into a laid-back, lively atmosphere. Next, visit the stunning Three Pagodas Temple, an ancient Buddhist complex with three towering pagodas that have stood for over a thousand years against the backdrop of the Cangshan Mountains. End the day with a leisurely stroll along the Erhai Lake ecological corridor, where you can take in postcard-perfect views of the lake and distant snow-capped peaks. You’ll stay another night at 🏨 Dali Iridescent Clouds Hotel.
🌟 Day 4: Dali → Lijiang Start your day with an included 🍽️ Western buffet breakfast, then leave Dali for Lijiang. First, stop in the riverside town of Xizhou to tour the traditional courtyard homes of the Bai ethnic minority, learning about the group’s unique architectural and cultural traditions. Next, head to nearby Zhoucheng to watch a live demonstration of traditional handcrafted Bai tie-dyeing, a centuries-old craft that produces vivid, one-of-a-kind textiles. When you arrive in Lijiang, wander the car-free cobblestone Square Street at the heart of UNESCO-listed Lijiang Old Town, a historic settlement full of winding lanes and gurgling canals. Check into your selected accommodation, either the scenic Duofu Resort or the centrally located ANYU Hotel in Lijiang Old Town, for the night.
🌟 Day 5: Lijiang After an included 🍽️ Western buffet breakfast, set out to explore Lijiang’s most charming off-the-beaten-path cultural gems outside the old town. First, visit the quiet, ancient Baisha Village, the original ancestral home of the Naxi ethnic people. You’ll be invited into a local Naxi family’s home to share conversation and learn about their daily traditions, then view the stunning centuries-old Baisha Murals, a collection of vibrant religious art that blends multiple cultural traditions. End the day with a visit to peaceful mountain Yuhu Village, nestled at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with sweeping views of the glacial peak. You’ll stay another night at your selected 🏨 Lijiang accommodation.

First, you’ll pause at the First Bend of the Yangtze River, where the mighty river makes a dramatic hairpin turn through the mountains, offering sweeping panoramic views of the valley below. Next, explore historic riverside Stone Drum Town, a quiet ancient trading hub with deep local roots. Then, explore the world-famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest and most dramatic river gorges on the planet, flanked by towering cliff sides and the thundering river below. When you arrive in Shangri-La, check into your selected 🏨 accommodation: Hilton Garden Inn Shangri-La or Hotel Indigo Diqing Moonlight.
🌟 Day 7: Shangri-La After your included 🍽️ Western buffet breakfast, dive into Tibetan culture and pristine alpine natural beauty today. The tailor-made flexibility of this tour is what makes it stand out from any other group tour I’ve taken. We could adjust our daily schedule if we wanted to stay longer at a village market or skip a spot we weren’t interested in, which made the whole trip feel relaxed and personal. If you want an authentic look at Yunnan’s ethnic cultures, this is 100% the tour to book.

I worked with consultant Sunny from HelloChinaTrip to tailor this itinerary to my interest in ethnic minority textile art, and she did an incredible job. She added a stop at a women’s weaving co-op in rural Lijiang that ended up being the highlight of my entire China trip. The private car was comfortable, all accommodations were clean and conveniently located, and our guide was always respectful of local customs when visiting remote villages. I couldn’t have asked for a better planned experience.

I was nervous about traveling independently in China, but this private tour made everything completely seamless. The pacing was perfect—we never felt rushed, but we also got to see and do everything on my wishlist. I loved the home-cooked ethnic meals we got to try in small villages outside Lijiang and Kunming. The surprise stop in Xi’an to see the Terracotta Warriors was such a great bonus that made the 8 days feel perfectly rounded.

As someone who prefers deep cultural travel over checking off tourist landmarks, this tour was made exactly for me. Our guide answered all my endless questions about ethnic minority history and modern life, and the private setup let us spend as much time as we wanted at each site. It was amazing to get to see real daily life instead of just curated tourist attractions.

This was the most immersive cultural tour I have ever joined.

The tour content and organization were fantastic, and I learned so much about Yunnan’s diverse ethnic groups. The only issue is that we traveled during Golden Week, so all popular sites were much more wonderful than anticipated. This is not a fault of the tour operator, just a heads up to avoid peak travel seasons if you can.

Our private guide knew endless details about Naxi and Bai ethnic traditions I’d never read about in guidebooks. They took us to small, local family events that aren’t open to big group tours, making every moment feel authentic.
