From Xi’an you’ll travel east to Shanghai, China’s buzzing modern financial heart, before winding through the lush water town landscapes of southern China with a special extension to postcard-perfect Suzhou. This route intentionally weaves together China’s 5,000-year history, vibrant contemporary culture, and ambitious modern future into one unforgettable cross-country adventure.

🌟 Day 2: Beijing Kick off your sightseeing with a morning visit to iconic Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest public city square steeped in modern Chinese history. Next, step into the 600-year-old Forbidden City, once the exclusive private domain of Chinese emperors, to wander its grand palaces and sprawling courtyards (special indoor exhibitions are not included on this tour). In the afternoon, head to the Temple of Heaven, a stunning ancient imperial altar where Ming and Qing rulers once worshipped for bountiful harvests. 🍽️ Breakfast is included at your hotel today, and you’ll stay another night at Dong Fang Hotel 🏨.
🌟 Day 3: Beijing Today you’ll head out of central Beijing to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, one of the most well-preserved and least crowded stretches of the ancient fortification. You’ll have plenty of time to walk along the wall and soak in sweeping mountain views (cable car rides are not included). After returning to the city, stop at a traditional local tea house to sample different Chinese teas and learn about centuries-old tea culture, before visiting the Summer Palace, the Qing dynasty’s former imperial summer retreat. You’ll explore the palace’s core public grounds (boat rides, theater access, and entry to Longevity Hill are excluded). 🍽️ Breakfast is included at your hotel, and you’ll spend your final night in Beijing at Dong Fang Hotel 🏨.
🌟 Day 4: Beijing → Xi'an Before departing Beijing for Xi’an (ancient capital of 13 Chinese dynasties), you’ll get a peek into authentic local life on a guided tour of Beijing’s iconic winding hutong alleyways, where generations of Beijingers have lived in historic courtyard homes. After your alleyway exploration, you’ll travel to Xi’an and check into your accommodation at Aurum International Hotel for the night. 🍽️ Breakfast is included at your Beijing hotel this morning 🏨.
🌟 Day 5: Xi'an Today is dedicated to Xi’an’s most iconic treasures: start your morning with a visit to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors Museum, where you’ll come face to face with thousands of life-sized clay warriors built to guard the tomb of China’s first emperor over 2,200 years ago. In the afternoon, visit the towering Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a 7th-century Buddhist landmark that once housed ancient scriptures brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang. End the day with a stop at a local jade factory to learn about China’s millennia-old tradition of jade craftsmanship. 🍽️ Breakfast is included at your hotel, and you’ll stay another night at Aurum International Hotel 🏨.
🌟 Day 6: Xi'an → Shanghai Kick off your final day in Xi’an with a visit to the remarkably well-preserved ancient City Walls of Xi’an, where you can walk along the top of the fortifications and take in panoramic views of the modern city spread out below. Next, wander through the bustling Muslim Quarter, a historic neighborhood packed with fragrant street food, traditional handicraft shops, and ancient mosques, perfect for picking up souvenirs or grabbing a casual bite (at your own expense). After your exploration, you’ll depart Xi’an for your next stop: Shanghai, China’s most dynamic modern metropolis. 🍽️ Breakfast is included at your hotel this morning.

The Suzhou extension is absolutely worth adding on to the base tour. The bustle of Shanghai and the grandeur of Xi’an and Beijing are balanced perfectly by Suzhou’s tranquil gardens and winding canals. I left feeling completely fulfilled, like I didn’t miss any of China’s must-see highlights.

I loved getting to see all 5 iconic cities in this well-planned 11-day immersive trip. The only downside was that we visited during the May national holiday, so most major sites were much more wonderful than we expected. Even so, the itinerary was paced well enough that we never felt too rushed, and every stop felt meaningful. I’d absolutely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a comprehensive introduction to China.
