This 8-day small-group adventure begins in Lhasa, Tibet's sun-drenched cultural heart on the roof of the world, where you'll acclimatize to the high altitude while diving into local traditions and exploring centuries-old sacred sites. After soaking up Lhasa's one-of-a-kind magic, you'll wind through dramatic high-elevation mountain passes toward Shigatse, stopping along the way to gaze at turquoise glacial lakes, tumbling ice glaciers, and remote snow-capped peaks, before pushing on to the ultimate bucket list stop: an overnight at Everest Base Camp. You'll then trace your route back, exploring one of Tibet's most important monastic sites before returning to Lhasa for your departure, balancing deep cultural connection with an unforgettable alpine adventure.
Arrive in Lhasa today, Tibet's vibrant capital, and take it slow to acclimatize to the high elevation after your journey. 🍽️ A hearty breakfast is included to kick off your trip, and you'll have the rest of the day to relax and settle in before your adventures begin. 🏨 You'll stay at either the premium La Garry Snow Dragon Manor Resort or The St. Regis Lhasa Resort.
Today is dedicated to hands-on authentic Tibetan cultural immersion! You'll start at the Traditional Tibetan Handicraft Art Center, where you'll try three iconic local activities: blending and rolling your own Tibetan incense, creating a custom print with traditional woodblock techniques, and learning the basics of Tibetan language and calligraphy from local instructors. In the afternoon, you'll visit Sera Monastery, one of Lhasa's most important historic monasteries, where you can wander ancient courtyards and even catch the famous daily monk debate sessions. 🍽️ Breakfast is included, and you'll spend another night at your premium Lhasa accommodation. 🏨
Today you explore Lhasa's most iconic, world-famous cultural landmarks. Kick off your morning with a visit to the sprawling Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, perched on a hillside with sweeping views over the entire Lhasa valley. Next, you'll tour Jokhang Temple, the most sacred Buddhist site in all of Tibet, built over 1,300 years ago and home to revered ancient Buddha statues. After exploring the temple, wander at your own pace through Barkhor Street, a historic pilgrimage loop bustling with local craft stalls, traditional eateries, and street vendors, where you can soak up everyday Lhasa life. 🍽️ Breakfast is included, and you'll stay a third night at your Lhasa accommodation. 🏨
Today you leave Lhasa and begin your westward journey into the heart of the Himalayas. Your first stop is Kampala Pass, sitting 4,797 meters above sea level, where you'll get your first sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountain ranges. Next up is a visit to Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet's three great sacred lakes, famous for its vivid turquoise waters that shift hue with every change of sunlight. 🍽️ Breakfast is included on the road, followed by a scenic lunch at the Yamdrok Lake View Restaurant, where you'll warm up with a delicious hot pot meal with unbeatable lake views. After lunch, you'll visit the dramatic Karola Glacier, which cascades down the mountainside nearly to the road, before stopping to take in views of striking Mount Nyenchen Khangsar. You'll arrive in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, in the evening to check in. 🏨 You'll stay at either Shigatse Cangyu Yabu Hotel or Hilton Shigatse.
Today brings the long-awaited journey to the base of the world's highest peak! After 🍽️ breakfast, you'll drive deeper into the Himalayas, stopping first at Rongbuk Monastery, the highest-altitude monastery on Earth, which boasts unobstructed front-row views of Mount Everest's north face. After exploring the ancient, windswept monastery, you'll continue to Everest Base Camp to settle in for the night. 🏨 You'll overnight in the authentic Everest Base Camp Tent Camp, falling asleep to the quiet stillness of the high Himalayas just steps from the legendary mountain.
Wake up early today for a chance to catch the iconic golden sunrise that paints Everest's peak soft pink, a memory that will last a lifetime. After 🍽️ breakfast, you'll begin your journey back down the mountain, stopping at Gyatso La Pass to take in sweeping panoramic vistas of the region's towering 8,000-meter peaks, including Everest. You'll continue all the way back to Shigatse for the night, checking into your accommodation after a day of incredible mountain views. 🏨 You'll stay at either Shigatse Cangyu Yabu Hotel or Hilton Shigatse.
After 🍽️ breakfast, you'll explore Shigatse's most famous sacred site: Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the centuries-old traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. Wander the sprawling complex to see giant gilded Buddha statues, vibrant ancient murals, and quiet, peaceful garden courtyards. After your tour of the monastery, you'll make the scenic drive back to Lhasa, arriving in the evening to check into your accommodation. 🏨 You'll stay at either La Garry Snow Dragon Manor Resort or The St. Regis Lhasa Resort.

I was worried that a small group tour would be more expensive, but the value here is unbeatable. Getting to see the sacred sites of Lhasa and the incredible Yamdroktso Lake in 8 days felt balanced, not rushed at all.

I’ve done a lot of adventure tours across Asia, and this one stands out as one of the best organized I’ve ever joined. The pace is ideal for acclimatizing to Tibet’s high altitude, with plenty of rest time in Lhasa after arriving. Our guide was happy to answer all our cultural questions and even helped us arrange a small blessing at a local monastery that wasn’t even on the itinerary. Every detail from accommodation to transport was taken care of, so we could just focus on enjoying the incredible scenery.

I was nervous about planning a Tibet trip as a solo traveler, but consultant Sunny from HelloChinaTrip answered all my questions before departure and made the whole process seamless. The itinerary is perfectly paced to help with altitude adjustment in Lhasa before heading out to the lake. Every meal we had was delicious, and our group of 10 people was way more fun than I expected. I left feeling like I got a genuine sense of Tibetan culture, not just a check-list tourist experience.

Yamdrok Tso Lake’s turquoise hue and Potala Palace’s grandeur made this the trip of a lifetime.

The itinerary was well planned and our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about Tibetan history and culture. We unfortunately got caught in a sudden late winter snowstorm that limited our time at Yamdroktso Lake, which kept us from getting the full experience. It was still a fantastic trip overall, just bad luck with the weather.

Lhasa felt so immersive with this small group tour, we got to interact with locals more than I ever have on big bus tours. Yamdroktso Lake is even more stunning in person than any photo I’ve seen online, and I’m so glad we got plenty of time to walk along the shore.

This small group size made everything so comfortable, we never felt rushed or crowded. Our guide knew all the best hidden photo spots around Lhasa that most big tours miss. I can’t recommend this enough for anyone wanting a real Tibet experience.
